The 25 best family hotels in Tybee Island (2024)

Hotel Tybee is a casual property located on the eastern side of Butler Avenue, offering unfussy rooms with some featuring ocean views. It's one of the few beach-front hotels on Tybee Island and boasts more than 200 spacious rooms, including one-bedroom suites with separate living areas. The hotel has been a favorite for over 130 years and offers two outdoor pools, a restaurant, bar, lounge, and event spaces.

Very friendly people, hotel was lovely! We had an oceanview king room with balcony. The sunrises were incredible. Everything we needed was just a short walk away. Water pressure in our shower was excellent. The room stayed plenty cool with the ac/Swamp cooler unit. Room was clean and comfortable. Would recommend!

We arrived at the hotel around 1:30am and were able to check in, we unloaded our things and hauled them to the second floor and unpacked. At 3:30am the air conditioning unit quit working. Before calling we spent 15 minutes pressing buttons and unplugging it. Nothing worked, so we called and were told we would have to to come to the office for a new room. So at 3:30am we were packing our bags and moving, we asked that the manager that came in at 9am the following morning to give us a call upon arrival. At 10am we went to the office and were told the manager was in fact there and asked again that she call. Around 4 we decided to just call the front desk since we hadn’t heard anything from the manager but when we did speak with her she made sure to tell us the maintenance guy had just went in there and it’s been running fine for 20 minutes. We notified her we had a video of it not working but it seemed like she was questioning us as if we weren’t being truthful. Who would want to move rooms at 4am after driving 6 hours and unpacking?! The rooms also had so much moisture in them that everything felt wet, the pillows, blankets, the floors, and our own belongings. It just felt gross. The plaster on the ceiling was falling down due to moisture. There were some broken tiles in the bathroom and the balcony doors don’t shut well or lock. Other than the the pool was nice, sheets and towels were clean, and it was a great location to local shops, eating spots, and bars! The free bikes were a nice touch but we had to pay $35 a day just to park at the hotel. Probably won’t stay there again.

We enjoyed our 2 night stay immensely!!Room: 3rd floor ocean viewBeautiful and clean room with remodeled hardwood style flooring. AC worked well, large television, ice machine conveniently located, microwave heated nicely, fridge/small top freezer kept supplies cold, cute bathroom, and an amazing view. Rooms also supplied with hand and bath towels, wash clothes, coffee maker/coffee, hair dryer, iron/ironing board, as well as bathroom supplies.Staff:Very friendly and helpful. Made check in/check out a smooth and easy process. Texted to offer assistance and directions if needed, answered questions and made sure we had a comfortable and pleasant stay. They are doing an amazing job! I appreciate the kindness and beautiful smiles, it is contagious brightens one's day.Amenities:Comfortable beach chairs supplied in room, beach towels, two lovely swimming pools, coffee maker and coffee, information on places to eat within a short walking distance (a great way to sight see the beautiful island and local shops). Will check out the bikes and beach yoga my next visit. I did observe the yoga classes while enjoying some beach time, it looked very relaxing and fun.Location:The beach is directly across from the hotel, you can literally walk across to it in a minute (there is a public parking area between). Gorgeous sunset and sunrise views. The weather reported frequent rain, however it barely rained and when it did only for a short while in the afternoon or evening. Many local shops and places to eat within walking distance.Thank you for a wonderful stay and experience,-The Virgil Family

We spent a lot of money and it was not worth it. There is public parking in front and behind the hotel. So you are in the heart of public access to the beach. It was so crowded. Our first walk on the beach there was a fight happening on the beach. The room was a good size with a great AC. The shower had little pressure. The room floor was only cleaned at the areas that are in the open. Behind chairs very dirty. Elevator and common areas if cleaned are done rarely. The small room fridge has a freezer tray that is never cleaned. I took it out and left in sink so they would clean it. Cleaning staff were nice. Too much money for what little you get. I think Hotel Tybee likes making the $40 per day parking money more than the hotel business and I guess I can’t blame them.

Hotel Tybee is the perfect place for a family vacation directly on the beach. We are so close to the pier, local restaurants and shops. My wife loves this place. The property is well maintained and they seem to be doing a lot of upgrades to the amenities. The desk staff have been so nice. Tonya at the front desk has the best personality and answered all of my questions for recommendations on food.

Large comfortable clean room with standard size bathroom. Nice view of the ocean. We had a pleasant stay and everything we needed was provided. The ballroom was very nice and accommodated our large group. The Motel is dated and could use some exterior upgrades. More lighting in the front parking area would be advisable for safety purposes.

Nice hotel, a bit dated but they are working on it currently. The majority of our stay was good until the fraternity and sorority checked in half the hotel. Beware the walls are paper thin! There's nothing like waking up at 4 in the morning to your neighbors that are drunk college kids having a fantastic time 😉 The other disappointment is the $35 a night charge for parking and to use a beach towel and beach chairs.

My visit to Hotel Tybee was a great experience. The hotel was clean and the bed very comfortable. We had a great view of the beach from our room. You can tell they did a lot of upgrades to the rooms and corridors. I will definitely be back.

If I could give less than one I would. First at check-in they tried to charge me an extra 50 for early check in even though it was after 3pm and check in is at 4 a whole 40 minutes away they wanted to charge an extra $50 .Then 20 minutes later they decide we can check in early because they decided to waive the check-in fee. By this time I was already on the beach. Then they charge me an extra $50 above the total cost with fee for the room that was given to me when I reserved it. The rooms were extremely dirty for almost $400 a night and NO breakfast it should have at least been clean and comfortable. For a double room that only gave you three towel yet the rooms maximum occupancy was four. The room was hot and the refrigerator had a leak. the microwave had a short in it you had to hold a cord a certain way just to get it to work. The chairs in the room where dirty. We wouldn't even sit on the chairs without putting a towel down. I was told at reservations that you could pack till 12 then once we get there and pay be informed that's not true you have to move it at check which is 11 overwise it's $40 for parking. The staff was rude. I've stayed at nicer hotels for less money with. I WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN. It was just plan out nasty. I wish I would have took heed to the customer in front of me that was asking for a refunds when I was checking in.

If I can give no stars for this hotel, I would. Upon checking in the toilet bowl had a ring around it… The air conditioner leaked all over the patio of our balcony, making water in and out of the room. Also, the picture on the website is deceiving it makes it look like you’re right on the beach but you have an awful parking lot right in front of your room. After being here for days, I still have not gotten my room clean… I called this afternoon and was told someone would come up and do it… No one ever came the place is dirty disgusting and bogus. The AC was all rusted on the bottom and sharp metal pieces hanging out as you can see from the photos. The track for the sliding door was so dirty could barely move the door. They had an extension cord hanging off the fridge raider with things plugged into it. The place was disgusting. I’m not lying see the photos.

I cannot say to much in the negative category. The view was phenomenal. Rooms could have been a little cleaner in respect to the floors. Do not wear white socks, they will not stay white long. The appearance and rooms could use some updating. The mattresses were semi firm, I prefer softer. There was sand, however, between the fitted sheet and mattress so made me question just how clean the mattresses were. The only real gripe I had was I reserved 2 rooms for one night side by side. When we checked in, one room was in one tower and the other was in the other tower at the far end of the motel. When I brought it up, I was informed that that request should have been made on reservation. I politely responded that I did. She looked it up and found it, but informed us that there were no rooms side by side since all were taken. It would have been nice for them to have knocked some money off our bill for their mistake, but I was not gonna push the issue. For the price they charge, would have been nice to have had a continental breakfast or something. Overall, I would give them a solid 4 stars. There is much need for improvements, but nothing that ruined our vacation.

My husband and I stayed for New Year's Eve. The room was nice, but I could hear every conversation being held in the room next door. The bed was comfortable. The staff was helpful and friendly. This hotel was not worth the $300 a night I paid.

Easy check in/out. Our view was amazing! Our room was very clean and newly renovated. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Location is perfect for walking to the pier, restaurants and shopping. We watched the moon rise from our balcony and walked out to the beach for beautiful sunrises.

The new tile floors look nice, but ours was disgustingly dirty from the moment we first walked in. It hadn't been swept and was covered with sand. There was also a big sticky spill of some kind near the desk, and smaller sticky spots all over the floor in different areas. We couldn't walk barefoot in the room without getting sticky residue and dirt on our feet. There were also sticky rings on the side table and desk, where it looked like someone had set down a sugary drink. Also, the safety bar on our balcony door was jammed into place and bent, so there was no way to move it and open the door. Even though we had a balcony, we had zero ability to use it. There was also no lamp or light of any kind on the night stand between the beds. We had to move the light from the desk in the corner over onto the nightstand to have any light near the beds for reading, etc. There was a sign on the door regarding ‘easy check out’ that instructed that we dial ‘0’ on the hotel phone when we left, but there was no phone in the room, so we just went down to the front desk to check out. This is the second time I've stayed at Hotel Tybee, the first being about 3 years ago, and I must say that this visit was disappointing. I thought that with the recent purchase of the hotel, and all the promised updates, this experience would be even better than last time, but the fact that the room wasn't even clean and the balcony had zero accessibility was highly disappointing. What's the point of spending money on updates when something as simple as the room's cleanliness between guests isn't being prioritized?

The location is good. However, the room isn’t clean and very outdated. Hair everywhere in the bathroom and the bathroom smelled of urine. The heater sounds like a tractor trailer. Ice machine broken. Refrigerator dirty and rusted. Dust everywhere. I have pictures to prove. I’m still here until Sunday due to already paying and not being able to be refunded. However, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel. As a matter of fact, I will not remain another night.Update- I ended up checking out early and staying at the Marriott! Absolutely no issues for the same money. The manager of Tybee did call, concerned with the post. If you are charging almost $400 a night for a room, your dirty is to make sure that it’s worth it and at least clean! Kudos to the General Manager who she said had her contact me due to the review. Im glad the GM is reviewing and hopefully changes are made.

I stayed in a king room on the top floor and must say the view was amazing. The people I interacted with are not the reason for the low service rating. The problem is they are a little deceptive about what is offered and what you pay for. I paid $400 a night for the room and a $35 a day "destination" fee. The fee supposedly covers parking, access to the pools, access to the tiki bar, and beach chairs and towels. I've never had to pay to park at a place I'm paying for the room before so that seemed odd to start and the tiki bar wasn't even open. The towels and chairs were in the room, but I kind of hoped for wooden sturdy lounge style chairs with umbrellas like I've seen in Panama. The last piece is the early check in fee. I drove 7 hours to get here and at night to avoid traffic early in the trip and arrived at noon. They charge a $50 early check in fee that was never mentioned when their email talked about what to expect if I arrived early. Overall I'm fine with it, but would appreciate more transparency in that regard. Finally is the parking. The advertisem*nt pictures lead you to believe you can park right next to the beach, but the back parking lot is public only and the path to get to it through the hotel is blocked to vehicle traffic. Last part is that for the price for the room I would like some form of food service at the hotel even if it wasn't a free service. Still the quality of the room itself and the location would make it worth coming back.

We were checked in by Office Manager Talisa Pickney. She was super friendly and professional. Hotel Tybee was clean and its a great location for Beach front. Restaurants within walking distance. Beach is peaceful and ocean waters was very relaxing. One of the Best Sunrise.

Ugh, I'm really conflicted. First, the location is amazing. It really can't be beat. I love the beach chairs and beach towels provided in the rooms. The front desk staff is very sweet.I feel like this hotel is going through a major renovation, and we stayed in the middle of it. I can tell that they're trying to update things - new floors, hallways numbers, some decor. But, the shortcomings outweigh the "trying". Our room looks like it was painted by a 5 year old. There's mold in the bathroom, holes in the wall, peeling paint on the ceiling, broken lampshades, rusty lamps and the balcony was very dirty/rundown. Even the pool liner was bubbling up in places. For over $300 a night (after $35/night for parking), this hotel just isn't worth it. If it was half, ok, you deal. But I feel very disappointed. I'm glad we spent more time at the beach than in our rooms.

Love the location and had a good time. Room was comfortable but needs to be painted. Didn't notice until i was back home but I had a minibar/snack charge added on my bill. The only snacks we had were paid at the time of purchase.

Real nasty, real rude staff, and real expensive. We came to Savannah for a concert and decided to stay on the beach. This place was a mistake. Staff was rude, the room was disgusting, lamps rusty, balcony rusty, floors stained and dirty, trash on floors, bathroom had pubic hairs all over, mice droppings everywhere, and no cleaning staff in sight. Hairdryer didn't work, smelled like weed in the hallways, homeless people in parking lot digging through trash. We had pigeons trying to get into our room from the "balcony." All they could offer us was free parking. And the "restaurants" near by are all bars and not family friendly. There is no grocery store nearby, and for one night this cost WAY too much. Smart TV but no subscriptions so only news channels. Don't make our same mistake!

We had such a great time this past weekend. We were in town for a soccer tournament. It was so nice to stay at the beach. At the last minute we needed an extra room, and the staff was so friendly and helpful. They were able to make everything happen.

Staff was friendly and the location of this hotel can’t be beat. Beach is within walking distance, sunrise from your own room can be had at an upgraded fee, and nearby shops and restaurants are also within walking to a bike ride distance. The main issue with this hotel is cleanliness. The floors were filthy, the ceilings had black patches of what could’ve either been dirt or mold, the beach chairs were rusty and un operable, hinges of doors and other metals on furniture were also rusted. This made for a haunting stay. Why did I stay? Checked in at 3:30pm and the option of staying somewhere else by then were slim plus thankfully the bedding was clean and so were the bathroom shower and towels. The only good part of our stay was being able to enjoy the beach that afternoon with my toddler and again seeing the sunrise in the morning. Otherwise, while in the room I had him play on the bed and wear shoes to walk around the room.

Great stay, my family really liked it here! We spent many days on the beach, walking around to different shops and restaurants, it was very relaxing. We could walk everywhere which was very nice after driving over 17 hours down to Georgia! The fishing off the pier was actually really good, we spent a couple of different days doing this while my wife sat on the beach and read. It was the best of both worlds. The rooms were clean, the staff was good, and the location couldn't have been better. Would recommend staying here if you're vacationing in Tybee with your family. We'll definitely be back!

Room quality varies greatly. Staff was polite and professional. I had a grimy room in the first floor and asked to be moved. They graciously moved me to the top floor, it was much cleaner, but I still ended choosing to mop the floor with supplies I purchased at the local IGA.

We really enjoyed our vacation on Tybee Island! The hotel has a great location, we could walk right to the beach, some really good restaurants downtown, and some great shopping! I loved that we could walk just about anywhere. And my husband and boys could fish right off the Tybee pier, which they loved. The service is great here, the staff is wonderful. And the view of the ocean from the rooms is worth every penny. Would definitely recommend staying here when you’re visiting Tybee!

Worst hotel I have stayed in.Staff called the police on me because I was standing outside smoking a cigar for less hour. The Police told me that they were called because had been told by the staff I was bothering other customers and causing issue. That was straight up a lie because I while was smoking in a smoking area I did not talk to anyone. The Police handle this issue very well and took great care of me. They verified my story and who I was and released me to enjoy rest of my night.I could go on but I’m not going to waste any more time. I have honestly never been anywhere and met such rude two-faced staff. If you are not majorly bothered by the cleanliness of your room and want a cheap place to lay down, like to stay in the hotel all day + night this is the place for you. However, if you are more the adventurous type, care about cleanliness, like to eat out and explore the island without feeling you’re being monitored DO NOT STAY.

I recently stayed at Hotel Tybee while attending a wedding and it exceeded my expectations.Loved my room- it was beautiful, modern, comfortable and the ocean view was nothing short of breathtaking… especially at sunrise! The staff's friendliness added to the overall positive experience. Attending my brother's wedding in the hotel's attached facility was a remarkable affair. The massive windows spanning three floors provided a stunning backdrop, creating a perfect setting for a wedding. My morning beach walks, dips in the pool, and exploration of the charming downtown with one of the free available bikes added to a wonderful experience. If you're looking for a peaceful beach retreat or beautiful wedding venue, Hotel Tybee delivers with its amazing views and inviting atmosphere. I highly recommend.
